About the role
COMPLIANCE & RISK GENERALIST
Remote (US)
JOB BLURB
Join Expensify’s Compliance Team and solve real problems for customers as we expand into new markets. You’ll help us work through regulatory requirements in a way that supports product growth, protects the business, and keeps things moving. This is a role for someone who likes hard problems and wants to be leading conversations that shape how we design new features.
YOUR MISSION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT
Join our passionate team of compliance experts to help people spend less time managing expenses and more time pursuing their real goals. As we revolutionize the way people manage their expenses, being part of the Expensify team means building the easiest, fastest, and most efficient platform to automate everything expense-related.
COMPLIANCE & RISK GENERALIST OVERVIEW
At the beginning you’ll spend your time owning the recurring chores already in place that keep Expensify operating: working through banking partner audits, maintaining certifications, completing due diligence, preparing regulatory filings, reviewing feature proposals, and handling new operational tasks that come as we launch new features.
As you settle in, you’ll collaborate cross functionally on projects and eventually lead through the initial design to launch. Some projects will be large, others will be small, but success in this role comes from making the entire team and product more effective over time rather than simply maintaining the status quo. Our goal on this team is to find practical, defensible ways to move the product forward.
What Makes This Opportunity Special
- Operate with autonomy. We’re a small team. You’ll be trusted to prioritize your work, exercise judgment, and solve problems without waiting for someone else to tell you what to do
- Own meaningful work. From regulatory reporting and vendor oversight to transaction monitoring and product reviews, your decisions will directly impact how Expensify operates and grows
- Join during a period of growth. As we continue expanding our money transmitter licensing footprint, this team is building and scaling the compliance program that supports operating under our own MTLs
- Help bake compliance in from the start. You’ll partner on work across teams at Expensify when features and processes are designed, making sure compliance is part of the conversation early instead of layered on after launch
- Build compliance into how we operate. You’ll work directly with teams across Expensify as new features and processes take shape, helping make the right compliance calls early without slowing things down
ABOUT YOU
- You’ve worked on a compliance team in a fast-moving fintech, payments, or similarly regulated technology company and are ready to dive into a role where compliance is a strategic partner, not just a control function
- You enjoy rolling up your sleeves and doing the work. You’re not looking to manage a team or spend all day in meetings
- Repetitive work doesn’t bother you because you see it as an opportunity. Once you’ve mastered a process, your instinct is to simplify it, automate it, or eliminate unnecessary steps
- You’re comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, documenting your reasoning, and asking for help when the research you’ve done still doesn’t bring certainty
- You communicate clearly with technical and non-technical teammates alike, explaining regulatory requirements in a way that helps people make better decisions rather than just follow rules
- You thrive in a highly autonomous environment where priorities change, new problems appear, and nobody is dictating what your top priority should be
Experience and Background
Required:
- 2+ years of experience on a Compliance Team in the FinTech industry or at a tech company that processes payments
- Background in vendor due diligence, KYC, or transaction monitoring workflows where accuracy, consistency, and judgment are critical
- Experience working cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, or similar teams on project focused work, not just daily tasks or escalations
- Strong written communication skills, with experience documenting decisions, preparing reports, and creating instructions
- Demonstrated ability to independently prioritize work, move decisions forward, and rely on your team when a second opinion is needed
Desirable:
- You have improved operational workflows through automation, process redesign, AI, scripting, or systems thinking
- You have led compliance work through higher-scrutiny moments, whether that’s preparing for audits, working through regulatory examinations, or helping launch features outside of the US
- CAMS certification
DAILY FOCUS & RESPONSIBILITIES
COMPLIANCE OPERATIONS
- Own the day-to-day operational work that keeps our compliance program running, completing recurring responsibilities accurately, consistently, and on time
- Support vendor due diligence, vendor onboarding, regulatory reporting, licensing requirements, and audits for banking partners and regulators
- Support the buildout of AML transaction monitoring in Unit21 to improve alert review, escalation, and suspicious activity monitoring
- Turn compliance policies and recurring issues into clear guidance that helps teams handle similar questions, make consistent decisions, and move forward with confidence
PRODUCT & RISK OVERSIGHT
- Review new feature proposals to identify compliance risks early and help teams find practical ways to address them
- Join product discussions early with a compliance-first mindset that also pushes to find a way to “get to yes”
- Help the team stay ahead of new compliance requirements as Expensify expands into more regulated products, states, and markets
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Full-time salaried position with starting compensation of $150,000–$175,000, including equity
- 401(k) with employer match
- 100% medical, dental, vision, and mental health coverage
- $20k annual family planning benefit through Carrot
- $5k relocation reimbursement if you move to San Francisco, Portland, or New York
- Up to three months of fully paid parental leave, with up to six months for birthing parents
- Commuter benefits
- Flexible vacation policy
We’re committed to providing a fair and inclusive hiring experience. If you need a reasonable accommodation at any stage of the process, just let us know—we’re happy to help
